How to Reattach Loose Vinyl Cove Base

Vinyl cove base protects the bottom of a wall and creates a clean transition at the floor. A short loose section can often be reattached, but adhesive will not solve an active leak, soft drywall, contaminated wall surface or a base strip that has shrunk and no longer reaches its original position.
Difficulty: Easy. Time: About 45–90 minutes of hands-on work, plus the adhesive manufacturer’s curing time.
Tools and materials
Cove-base adhesive approved for the base and wall materials
Small plastic scraper or flexible putty knife
Notched spreader specified by the adhesive manufacturer
Hand roller
Mild cleaner approved for both surfaces
Clean cloths, painter’s tape and drop cloth
Utility knife with a fresh blade only if trimming is required
Gloves and eye protection
Safety and limitations
This guide is for a small, accessible loose section on a dry, sound wall. Stop if you find moisture, mold, crumbling drywall, loose plaster, damaged flooring or an unknown oily or chemical residue. Ventilate the room and follow the adhesive safety data and manufacturer directions.
Do not probe or fasten into the wall where wiring, plumbing or other hidden services may be present. Avoid unapproved solvents, heat guns and open flames. Older adhesives or wall materials may require testing before disturbance.
Numbered steps
Find the reason it released. Check for water from appliances, plumbing, exterior walls or floor cleaning. Press the wall and base gently to identify soft, swollen or contaminated areas. Correct the cause before attempting adhesion.
Check the fit. Hold the cove base in its original position without stretching it. If it has shrunk, curled severely or no longer reaches the adjoining pieces, replacement may look better than forcing it.
Protect the floor. Place a drop cloth and use painter’s tape where appropriate. Test tape and cleaners on an inconspicuous area first.
Clean both bonding surfaces. Remove dust and ordinary soil with compatible cleaner. Scrape away only loose adhesive that releases without tearing the wall face. Do not enlarge the repair unnecessarily.
Dry-fit the base. Confirm the top edge, corners and joints align. If the material is stiff, condition it only within the temperature range and method allowed by its manufacturer.
Apply compatible adhesive. Use the specified spreader and coverage rate. Keep adhesive off the visible face and away from joint edges where squeeze-out would be difficult to clean.
Set the cove base. Press it into position from one end to the other without stretching. Keep the toe seated at the floor and the top edge aligned with adjacent sections.
Roll the bond. Use a hand roller with firm, even pressure, especially at the top edge and toe. Do not crush or distort the profile.
Control the cure. Use painter’s tape or temporary support only if permitted and only on finishes that will not be damaged. Remove adhesive residue using the manufacturer-approved method and observe the required cure time before washing the area.
Reinspect the next day. Check the edges, joints and wall for movement or moisture. Repeated release usually indicates an unresolved substrate, water or compatibility problem.
When to call a qualified professional
Moisture, mold, soft drywall, damaged plaster or flooring is present.
A long run or multiple rooms are loose.
The base has shrunk, split or lost its shape.
The wall surface tears away with the old adhesive.
The adhesive or substrate is unknown or potentially hazardous.
The room is commercial and sanitation, accessibility or occupancy requirements apply.
