Real Kitchen Remodel Transformation: A Wider Kitchen, Custom Cabinets and Butcher Block Island
Updated: Oct 4

What happens when a kitchen needs more than new paint and hardware? This actual Majestic Construction Group LLC project shows how a carefully planned remodel can change the way an entire room looks and functions. We expanded the original kitchen by two feet, completely rearranged the layout, custom-built the new cabinets, created a tray ceiling, installed new lighting and built a large island finished with butcher block countertops.
The finished layout leaves approximately four feet of clear walk-around space around the new custom island. That clearance was a deliberate design goal: a beautiful kitchen should also make it easy to cook, move, open cabinetry and gather with family.
From before to during construction to the finished kitchen
These are photographs of the actual project, documented from the original kitchen through construction and the completed remodel. The before photo shows the previous cabinet arrangement and a more confined layout. The construction photo shows the major reconfiguration in progress. The after photo shows the redesigned kitchen, custom cabinetry, tray ceiling, island and coordinated finishes.

1. We widened the original kitchen by two feet
Two additional feet can make a substantial difference in a kitchen when the layout is designed around the room's circulation and cabinet needs. This expansion helped us rethink how the cabinets and island fit together rather than trying to squeeze new features into the old arrangement.
A successful kitchen expansion starts with understanding existing walls, framing, services and how the new space connects to surrounding rooms. Those details affect the scope and should be evaluated before demolition or cabinet ordering.
2. We completely rearranged the kitchen layout
Instead of putting new cabinets in the same locations, we redesigned the kitchen's arrangement. The goal was to create more useful work areas, improve access to the cabinetry and give the island a central role without overcrowding the room.
When planning your own remodel, think through where family members enter the kitchen, how refrigerator and appliance doors open, where groceries are unloaded and whether more than one person can comfortably work in the space.
3. We built all-new custom cabinets
Custom-built cabinetry allowed this kitchen to be designed for its new footprint and layout. The finished result includes coordinated cabinet fronts, generous perimeter storage and an island with its own cabinet storage. The consistent design helps tie the expanded room together.
Unlike choosing cabinets solely from a standard catalog, custom cabinetry makes it possible to plan around a particular room, fit, storage needs and preferred appearance. The right design can reduce awkward unused areas and make everyday essentials easier to reach.
4. We added a tray ceiling and all-new lighting
The tray ceiling gives the remodeled room architectural character and draws attention upward. Combined with the newly installed lighting, it helps establish the kitchen as a distinctive space rather than simply a row of cabinets and appliances.
Lighting should be planned alongside the cabinet layout. General ceiling lights, fixtures above an island and appropriately designed work-area lighting all serve different purposes. Coordinating these decisions early can avoid changes after ceilings and finishes are complete.
5. We built a custom island with four feet of walk-around space
The island is a focal point, but the most important detail may be the space around it. We planned the remodel to provide a four-foot-wide walk-around around the new custom-built island, helping create comfortable circulation and access to nearby cabinet and work areas.
For homeowners considering an island, the right size depends on the room, appliance and drawer clearances, door swings and how the kitchen is used. A properly proportioned island usually provides more value than an oversized one that makes movement difficult.
6. Butcher block countertops brought warmth to the finished design
The butcher block countertops provide a rich natural-wood look that complements the cabinetry and the finished kitchen. The broad butcher block island top, in particular, brings warmth and visual contrast to the room.
Wood countertops also need a finish and maintenance plan suited to their intended use. The appropriate choice depends on exposure to moisture, the desired appearance and the finish manufacturer's care instructions. Homeowners should discuss those requirements during material selection.
What this project demonstrates about full kitchen remodeling
The biggest transformation came from combining layout changes, added space and custom carpentry—not from any single decorative feature. The two-foot expansion made room for a better arrangement; the custom cabinets and island made the space more useful; and the ceiling, lighting and wood surfaces completed the design.
If you are budgeting for a kitchen renovation, start with the changes that affect daily function. Establish the scope of any expansion, cabinetry, layout, lighting coordination, countertops and finish carpentry before comparing estimates. A clear scope helps the finished kitchen match both your goals and your available budget.
