A dark line on luxury vinyl plank flooring may be transferred rubber, dried residue, a shallow surface mark, or a gouge through the wear layer. Identifying the type of damage first prevents an aggressive repair from making a small blemish permanent.

Difficulty, time, and scope

Difficulty: Easy for residue and very light surface marks. Time: About 20–45 minutes, plus product drying time. This guide does not cover deep gouges, broken locking edges, widespread wear, loose planks, water beneath the floor, or structural subfloor problems.

Tools and materials

Floor manufacturer's care instructions; vacuum with hard-floor setting or soft broom; microfiber cloths; manufacturer-approved neutral cleaner; clean water; flashlight or portable light; felt furniture pads; and only a touch-up product specifically approved for the exact flooring line and finish.

Safety and limitations

Keep liquids away from receptacles and electrical equipment. Never mix cleaners. Do not sand, scrape with metal, use steel wool, apply solvent, use a heat gun, or coat the area with wax, polyurethane, permanent marker, or an unapproved repair compound. These methods can remove or discolor the factory wear layer and may affect the warranty.

Step-by-step evaluation and care

1. Find the product information

Check leftover cartons, receipts, installation records, or the manufacturer's website. Confirm the approved cleaner, finish type, warranty restrictions, and whether a color-matched touch-up system exists.

2. Remove loose grit

Vacuum with the beater bar off or sweep gently. Grit left under a cloth can create additional scratches.

3. Clean the mark

Apply the approved cleaner to the cloth rather than flooding the floor. Wipe the mark gently, then wipe with a separate cloth dampened with clean water if the manufacturer directs.

4. Dry and inspect under side lighting

Allow the plank to dry completely. Shine light across the surface at a low angle. If the line disappeared, it was likely transfer or residue. If a fingernail catches in it, the damage may be deeper than routine cleaning can address.

5. Spot-test an approved touch-up product

Only if the flooring manufacturer approves a specific product, test it in an inconspicuous area and follow the exact application, wiping, and drying directions. Stop if the color, sheen, or texture changes.

6. Treat only the affected area

Use the smallest amount permitted, keep the product within the mark, and remove residue as directed. More product does not produce a better repair.

7. Allow full drying time

Keep feet, pets, furniture, and cleaning equipment away until the stated drying or curing period has passed.

8. Prevent the next scratch

Clean grit regularly, use entry mats approved for vinyl, place felt pads under furniture, lift instead of dragging heavy objects, and check pads for embedded debris.

When to call a qualified professional

Call a flooring professional when the wear layer is cut through, the plank is chipped or loose, seams are lifting, damage covers several boards, moisture is present, the floor moves, or plank replacement requires disassembling a large area. Do not conceal moisture or subfloor damage with a cosmetic product.
