White haze on shower glass usually develops as water droplets dry and leave minerals and soap residue behind. The glass may tolerate a cleaner that damages nearby natural stone, metal coatings, grout, or sealant, so the surrounding materials matter as much as the glass.

Difficulty, time, and scope

Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Time: About 30–60 minutes, plus drying time. This guide covers ordinary surface mineral deposits on accessible glass. It does not cover etched glass, cracked panels, loose hardware, failed waterproofing, suspected mold, or working from unstable steps or ladders.

Tools and materials

Shower-door manufacturer's care instructions; gloves and eye protection; microfiber cloths; nonabrasive sponge; plastic squeegee; clean water; towels; and a glass cleaner or mineral-deposit remover specifically approved for the glass, its coating, and adjacent finishes. Use a plastic scraper only if the manufacturer expressly allows it.

Safety and limitations

Ventilate the bathroom. Never mix cleaning products, especially acids, chlorine bleach, or ammonia. Keep products off natural stone, painted finishes, metal coatings, grout, and sealant unless the manufacturer confirms compatibility. Do not use razor blades, steel wool, harsh abrasive powder, or excessive force. Stop if the glass is cracked or hardware is loose.

Step-by-step cleaning

1. Identify the glass and nearby finishes

Check whether the glass has a factory-applied protective coating and identify natural stone, coated metal, acrylic, or specialty tile nearby. Their care instructions control product choice.

2. Rinse loose residue

Use clean lukewarm water to remove loose soap and grit. Dry the frame and surrounding surfaces so the test area is easy to observe.

3. Spot-test the approved cleaner

Apply a small amount in an inconspicuous location using the specified dilution and dwell time. Rinse and dry, then inspect for haze, discoloration, or coating change.

4. Protect adjacent materials

Place towels where runoff could contact sensitive finishes. Apply cleaner to the cloth or sponge when that provides better control than spraying.

5. Work in small sections

Apply the approved cleaner evenly and allow only the stated dwell time. Keep it from drying on the surface. Agitate gently with a nonabrasive sponge.

6. Rinse thoroughly

Remove all residue with clean water, directing runoff safely. Repeat a gentle cycle rather than increasing chemical strength or abrasion.

7. Squeegee and dry

Squeegee from top to bottom, wipe edges and hardware with a microfiber cloth, and dry the glass to judge the result accurately.

8. Reduce future buildup

Squeegee after use, improve normal bathroom ventilation, and follow the glass manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Do not apply an aftermarket coating unless it is approved for the existing glass.

When to call a qualified professional

Call a professional when deposits do not respond to approved cleaning, the surface appears permanently etched, glass is cracked, the door drags, hardware moves, water escapes the enclosure, sealant has failed, or there is suspected mold or concealed water damage.
