Difficulty, time and scope

Difficulty: Moderate. Active work time: about 2 to 4 hours for a small area, plus product-specific cure time. This guide is for localized, non-structural grout deterioration in sound floor tile. It is not a repair for loose tile, cracked substrate, ongoing water intrusion, mold, widespread failure or movement joints.

Tools and materials

  • Matching grout type and color suitable for the joint width and tile.

  • Manual carbide grout saw or grout-removal tool appropriate for the tile.

  • Grout float, margin trowel, buckets and clean sponges.

  • Vacuum with fine-dust filtration and a soft brush attachment.

  • Eye protection, gloves and a properly fitted dust mask or respirator suitable for the product and dust exposure.

  • Painter’s tape and manufacturer-approved grout sealer if required.

Safety and limitations

Grout and silica-containing dust can irritate the lungs and eyes. Control dust, ventilate the room and follow product safety data and manufacturer directions. Avoid aggressive powered removal near fragile tile edges or hidden heat systems. Do not disturb suspect asbestos-containing flooring or materials. Stop if tile moves, cracks spread, moisture is present, mold is suspected or the cause of failure is unknown.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Identify why the grout failed. A small surface defect may be repairable, but repeated cracking, loose tile or hollow movement can indicate substrate or installation problems that new grout will not solve.

  2. Choose a replacement grout compatible with the existing tile, joint width and location. Make a small color sample because cured grout can differ from the package.

  3. Protect nearby finishes and wear eye, hand and respiratory protection. Remove loose debris before cutting.

  4. Using a manual grout saw, remove deteriorated grout to the depth recommended by the grout manufacturer. Keep the tool centered and use light passes to avoid chipping tile edges.

  5. Vacuum the joints thoroughly. Wipe as directed for the selected product, then allow the joint condition to meet the manufacturer’s requirements before mixing.

  6. Mix a small batch using exact water or additive proportions. Let it slake and remix if the instructions require it; do not add extra water to extend working time.

  7. Pack grout diagonally across the joints with the float, holding it at an angle so the joints fill fully. Remove excess from the tile surface.

  8. After the stated initial set, wipe diagonally with a damp—not dripping—sponge. Rinse frequently and avoid washing grout out of the joints.

  9. Shape and inspect the joints. Remove haze using the manufacturer’s timing and method, then protect the area from traffic and water for the full cure period.

  10. Apply sealer only if the grout manufacturer calls for it, after the specified cure time. Sealant is not a substitute for fixing movement or moisture.

Do not grout movement joints

Perimeter and movement joints often require a flexible sealant rather than rigid grout. Filling a designed movement joint with grout can cause renewed cracking or damage at adjacent tile. Follow the tile and setting-material manufacturer’s details.

When to call a qualified professional

Call a tile professional or contractor when several tiles are loose, cracks cross multiple tiles, the floor deflects, water is entering from below or behind the assembly, or the work involves a shower pan or other waterproofed system. Majestic Construction Group LLC can evaluate related flooring, water-damage and remodeling concerns. Call 601-808-2284.
