How to Safely Mount a TV on the Wall: A DIY Homeowner Guide

A wall-mounted television can free up floor space and create a cleaner room layout. The most important part of the installation is not the screen's position—it is confirming that the wall structure, mount and exact fasteners are suitable for the weight and movement of the television.

Safety first: this guide covers straightforward installations on walls with positively identified, suitable wood framing or manufacturer-approved backing. Do not assume drywall alone can carry a television, and do not drill where electrical wiring, plumbing, gas lines or other concealed services may be present. If you cannot confirm what is behind the wall, stop and hire a qualified installer.

Difficulty, time and tools

Difficulty: intermediate. Allow approximately 1–3 hours for a straightforward installation, depending on the television, wall and mount. Use at least two adults to lift and place the television; a heavy or oversized screen may require professional handling.

What you will need

  • A wall mount approved for the TV's screen size, actual weight and VESA mounting pattern

  • The mount's original manufacturer instructions, TV manual and specified installation hardware

  • A suitable stud finder and a reliable method of positively confirming wood-stud location and center

  • Tape measure, pencil, level and masking tape

  • Drill, bits, socket or driver sized exactly as directed by the mount manufacturer

  • Eye protection and a stable working platform if needed

  • A second adult to safely lift and attach the television

  • An existing code-compliant electrical outlet and a suitable cord-management solution that does not conceal an ordinary power cord inside a wall

Step 1: confirm the television and mount are compatible

Look up the television's actual weight, size and VESA hole spacing, then verify that the mount is rated for all three. A full-motion arm can place extra leverage on the wall; follow its specific structural mounting requirements rather than copying a generic installation video. Use only the TV-side screws and spacers approved for that television and mount.

Step 2: choose a safe location and viewing height

Decide where people usually sit and position the screen for a comfortable view. Check that the wall is large enough for the full television and any movement of the mount. Plan enough clearance for cables, ventilation and nearby furniture, and keep the screen out of locations where a door or other object can strike it.

Step 3: verify the wall construction and hidden hazards

Use a stud finder as one clue, then positively confirm the location and center of the suitable structural wood studs using a safe method consistent with the mount manufacturer's instructions. A stud finder may also respond to pipes or other hidden items. Do not drill until you are confident the selected locations are clear of electrical, plumbing and other services. Metal-stud, masonry, plaster, unusually thick or damaged walls may require a different engineered system or professional installation.

Step 4: lay out the mounting plate

Hold the wall plate at the planned height and use the level and pencil to mark its approved mounting positions. The marks must align with the structural supports specified in the mount instructions. Never adjust the hole pattern just to make the plate fit if doing so would bypass required fasteners or supports.

Step 5: install the wall plate as the manufacturer directs

Drill only the approved pilot holes at the confirmed safe positions, using the exact bit size and depth in the mount instructions. Install the supplied or specified structural fasteners and tighten to the manufacturer's requirements. Do not substitute ordinary drywall anchors for structural attachment, and do not overtighten or strip the fasteners.

Step 6: fit the brackets to the television

Place the television screen-down only on a clean, protected surface if the TV manufacturer permits it. Install the TV-side brackets using the specified screw length, spacers and VESA pattern. Screws that are too long can damage the television, while screws that are too short may not retain it. Follow the exact TV and mount manuals.

Step 7: lift, attach and secure the television

With at least one other adult, lift the television using the approved handholds and engage the brackets with the wall plate exactly as the mount instructions show. Fit and verify every required locking screw, latch or retaining device before releasing the television. Do not put your body under an unsecured screen.

Step 8: check the result and manage the cables

Check that the mount and screen are stable, level and correctly latched. Test any movement slowly while supporting the screen, following the mount's limits. Route cables with an appropriate surface raceway or other permitted solution. Do not run a standard detachable TV power cord through a wall; recessed electrical work belongs to a qualified electrician under applicable requirements.

When should a homeowner call a professional?

Hire a qualified installer when the wall is masonry or metal-stud construction requiring special hardware; the wall backing cannot be confirmed; the mount is especially large or full-motion; the television is heavy; hidden wiring or plumbing may be present; or a new or recessed outlet is needed. A secure installation is more important than saving the installation charge.
